Are Men Really More Athletic Than Women?

Patriarchy is a hegemonic ideology that often presents the assumption that men are more athletic and strong than women. This ideology presents this as a brute fact when in reality, it is a social fact. This ideology makes it seem that no woman could ever out lift or out run a man when in fact that is not always the case. Women have the potential to be just as athletic as men. Some women may not have the desire to workout or stay in shape as well as some men, but that does not make them incapable of doing so. Yes, men have more testosterone than women but that necessarily doesn't make them more athletic. Some women may workout or train much harder than their male peers. This is a social fact because over time it could change and this assumption may not have necessarily been the case in the past or across all cultures. The fact that men are supposedly more athletic/strong than women is merely a common sense assumption when it isn't always true. I'm sure most of you know of women that are more athletic than men.

  1. Although I do agree that there are woman in society who are more athletic when compared to certain males in society, I believe that whether or not a woman is more athletic when compared to a man is completely circumstantial. If an athletic woman who works out on a regular basis is compared to a man who never works out most people would agree that the woman is more athletic. However, if an athletic woman who works out on a regular basis is compared to a man who works out on a regular basis, the man will prove to be more "athletic" in a sense that they will be stronger and faster. Biologically speaking men have a higher capacity for muscle growth.

  2. Oh women are defiantly more athletic than men!!!(; But this is defiantly a social fact. I watched a video on Tiger TV and it was a Mo vs. Brad Wing. Mo is the LSU girls soccer goalie and Brad Wing is of course the punter for the LSU football team. So on these videos they do like little competitions and Mo actually out punted brad wing by like ten yards. Both of them are great athletes but Brad got out kicked by a girl!!

  3. I definitely agree that this assumption is made, and often. I know quite a few girls who are extremely athletic and could kick a guys but at many a sport. Just because some women, like I, choose not to play sports does not make it acceptable for the assumption to be made that women dont play sports or are weaker and less able to play them
